North Dakota: PrestateCycle

NORTH DAKOTA

Motorcycles were included in some the earliest city ordinances, with Fargo (1906) and Valley City (1909) being known.  It is believed that the same automobile plates were also assigned to motorcycles.  See the North Dakota Pre-state Local page for details of those cities.

State-issued motorcycle plates began in 1911 along with passenger plates.  The 1911 plates were in a vertical format and were issued in pairs.  Motorcycle registrations totaled 265 in 1911, yet the highest 1911 cycle plate known is #733, which indicates that perhaps many more plates were ordered than were needed.
